Care Tips for Silk, Wool & Other Delicate Fabrics in Humid Weather

Singapore’s high humidity isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s also harsh on fabrics. Delicate materials like silk, wool, linen, and cashmere are particularly vulnerable in our climate. Improper storage or cleaning can lead to warping, shrinkage, and even irreversible damage. Here’s how to protect your investment pieces year-round.

1. Avoid Plastic Garment Bags

While they may seem protective, plastic bags trap moisture and accelerate mildew growth. Instead, use breathable garment covers made of cotton or non-woven fabric to let garments ventilate.

2. Don’t Wait to Clean After Wearing

Even one wear can leave behind body oils, perspiration, and perfumes that weaken fibres over time. Silk and wool in particular degrade if left untreated. Always clean before storing long-term.

3. Be Careful with DIY Steaming

Home steamers can leave water spots or shrink garments if the temperature is too high. Ironing with a cloth barrier or using professional steaming is much safer.

4. Store with Care

Never hang delicate knits like cashmere. Instead, fold them with acid-free tissue paper to preserve shape and reduce crease marks. Keep them off damp walls or tightly packed wardrobes.

5. Trust Professional Cleaning

At Presto, we assess every garment’s fabric and construction before cleaning. We use custom techniques for silk, wool, and blended fabrics—ensuring the best care without shrinkage or shine.

Why It Matters:

Delicate garments are often investment pieces. With proper care, they’ll last years longer and retain their colour, fit, and softness.
